To Elfin or Not to Elfin

new elfin.JPG

Here I am again, modeling my vision of Elfin in "Sigh" felted tweed and "Dewberry" kid silk haze. Thanks go out to Emma and Sissel for the colour consulation.

Now, its Wednesday, dear readers, and you know what that means...the phone lines are open for the Wednesday Whine. As you all settle in and Scottie Jill passes out the beverages and Ulrika the chocolate muffins, I want to introduce the newest knitalonger to join our little knitting party...a big warm CurlsandPurlsNYC welcome to KnitStuff Jen .

I want to be the first one to whine today. Here goes.....what should I do???? As knitted so far, my gauge for the lovely Elfin is woefully inaccurate. I have too many stitches across and rows per inch (and I swatched, honest!!). Is it me, I ask? I thought maybe it was until last week when Miss Becky, our webmistress and hostess with the mostess here at CurlsandPurlsNYC, posted an interesting omission in the pattern for this sweater....that none was given for the felted tweed version of this sweater, only the kid silk haze version. YIKES!!

Now, my co-knitalong hostess, Miss Emma, has asked me not to give up on this sweater, re-swatch with different needles, and forge ahead. I dutifully listened to Emma and started another swatch, with US 6 needles, but my enthusiasm has waned somewhat. Simply stated...I am afraid. Mason Dixon Kay has abandonned this sweater, in part because of this "is this the right gauge" issue and is knitting Olive instead from Rowan 26. I LOVE my purple felted tweed and I think that I would look GREAT in Elfin but I am torn.

I looked through my Rowan pattern books and remembered that I have been hankering to knit this:

alternate.JPG

Its Zoe from Rowan 30!!! It has ribbing at the center for shaping and is v.v.pretty. The pattern calls for pockets, but I think that I would opt not to knit them (pockets in that area on a sweater I think should generally be avoided because they are unflattering!!). I could use my purple felted tweed for the main part of this sweater and knit the border on the neck, sleeves, and body in a lovely shade of green felted tweed called "Herb." So, to Elfin or Not to Elfin, that is the question....what do you think?

A (Male) Knitter is Born

SSCN0070.JPG

No need to adjust your computer screens....yes, indeed, the picture before you is a male knitter!! Meet Larry, friend and newly minted knitter!! It was a lovely Sunday...delicious brunch cooked at my house, an afternoon play, and then an evening of fighting off the fear of the work week by relaxing, chatting, and for some of us knitting!! When I jokingly asked Larry if he wanted to knit, he seriously responded with a great big YES!! After one quick lesson, Larry took to knitting like a duck takes to water...and is even partial (so far) to bamboo needles. For the time being, Larry is practing garter stitch on some manly forest green Wool Ease!! If all goes well, this garter stitch practice piece could become a long, long scarf!! Who knows, maybe he will join the knitalong!!!

The Sunday Gravy

1saucepan-thumb.jpg

Every family has its traditions. In my family while I was growing up, one of our traditions was the Sunday gravy. In our house "gravy" was the term we used for "tomato sauce." The Sunday gravy, although eaten in the late afternoon, was started sometime around 9:00 am. While most kids I knew woke up on Sunday morning to the smell of bacon and eggs, pancakes or waffles, I would wake up to the smell of fresh "gravy" and meatballs. Sunday in our house went something like this: my dad would wake up first, go to the bakery and get fresh rolls, buns, and the newspaper. My mom would make a fresh pot of coffee and they would have breakfast together. Not long after my mother finished her morning coffee, she would start "the gravy" a delicious mixture of tomatoes, garlic, parsley, and some other ingredients that I have sworn never to reveal. Once the gravy was started, she would make the meatballs...another unbelievably delicious recipe that I am also not at liberty to disclose (ever!), sausages, or other bits of meat she felt like cooking. By the time the meatballs were in the frying pan the whole family was at the kitchen table...me, my dad, my two brothers, and the dog. While the kids ate breakfast and fought over the newspaper and the last jelly doughnut, my father (and the dog) worked on getting meatball samples. Pretty soon a loaf of fresh italian bread would appear out of nowhere and my mother would demand that we taste the gravy with the bread. Soon a relative or two would arrive, and maybe a neighbor, and the breakfast party would begin. Things would get loud, my mother would play italian music, and life as we knew it on Sunday would be in full bloom. In the late afternoon when the house was quiet again we would eat our dinner of "macaroni" with fresh gravy and meatballs. When all was said and done my mom would sit in her favorite chair and crochet while my dad and the dog snoozed on the couch.

My Sundays now are not that traditional, although now and again I make the Sunday gravy for my father....and the great thing about the Sunday gravy is that the routine is the same, even for those who don't know it. Once the gravy is simmering and the meatballs are cooking, friends arrive, and things get loud. And like my mother, when all is said and done, I can now sit on the couch and knit.

Happy Sunday!

Onsdagsgnäll !! Onsdagsklynking!!

1phone141-thumb.jpg

Welcome Wednesday Whiners!!! Thanks to Ulrika and Sissel, I now know how to say "Wednesday Whine" in Swedish and Norwegian!! Onsdagsgnäll !! Onsdagsklynking!!

A big CurlsandPurlsNYC welcome to our newest knitalonger....Scottie Jill!! Scottie Jill stopped by the other day in a rather "spirited" mood!! So much so, that I have put her in charge of beverages for our weekly meetings!!

Big thanks and congratulations go out to Amy Singer, our newest friend and Knitty Editor, for saying such nice things about the Fall 2003 Sweater/Jumper Knit-a-long in her new column over at Intervweave Online!!

The Whine Lines are open.....tell me how its going, or not!! Today, I have a bit of whinging to do myself!! I think that my GAUGE may be WRONG on my Elfin. OY VAY!! Too afraid to check and have ceased knitting it until I can.

True Confessions

I have a HUGH crush on:

Jamie Oliver, of "The Naked Chef" fame;

Dean Olsher, from "The Next Big Thing, one of my favorite radio programs on NPR; and

David Broncaccio, one of the new interviewers on NOW .

More importantly, if I EVER have a date with any of them (hey, a girl can DREAM, can't she?) I will wear this shirt:

oohhlalaashirt.jpg

This shirt, trust me, is "ohh la,laaaa"!! In fact, that it is what I will call it from now on, my "ooohh, la, laaaa" shirt"!! Where from? V.V. recently at Century 21, of course!!

And for those of you clamouring for CurlsandPurlsNYC knitting news, I finished my cashmere merino scarf last week. So far it has been well received, by those who know me and those who don't!! I LOVE when that happens!

In other knitting news, I worked some on the first sleeve a project I call "Tangelo Baby," a sweet little baby sweater properly called "Minnie" from Rowan 33.

SSCN0037.JPG

As featured in Rowan 33, the sweater is done in a polka dot intarsia...but I opted to use this orangey Patons Grace instead of fussing with intarsia knitting. This yarn knits up beautifully and comes in some great solids and multis. It is also the perfect substitute for Rowan's Cotton Glace.

That said, it is now time to get ready for the week ahead, which hopefully will allow me time to work on this sweater, as well as the ever popular Elfin!!

Curious Bits

The other day at the work as I rushed into my office to answer the telephone, I quickly took off my scarf and jacket and sort of threw them on my chair. While I was on phone I looked down to notice that sprinkled in with some loose change that had fallen out of my pocket was a stitch marker.

SSCN0020.JPG

As I continued to look around my office I noticed that one skein of Cotton Ease, white, was on one of my filing cabinets. Weird thing is, I don't remember how or why it got there. Ditto for the stitch marker. Guitar picks and bobby pins frequently turn up all over my apartment and office. Stitch markers, yarn, and other accoutrements of knitting have now joined the ranks of curious bits that inexplicably turn up here and there.

Blog Candy!!!

Since I don't have an "About Me" page at this blog, I thought that I might take a moment to let you know a little secret about me. I LOVE CANDY. There, I said it. Cadbury chocolate (all of it), Snickers, Milky Way, candy corn (in season only) chocolate eggs (ditto) malted balls, Raisinettes, Swedish Fish, Gummy Thingamies, Twizzlers, Mentos (fruit and mint!!) Smarties, and the York Peppermint Pattie to name a few of my favorites.

I also LOVE BLOG CANDY, such as this:

sj-knit.jpg

This lovely bit of blog candy was a gift from Donna !! Donna has generously donated this blog candy to all knit-a-long participants....but just remember if you put it on your site, give her props for the design and copy it to your hard drive, 'cause bandwidth costs money!!

A few housekeeping matters....a big warm CurlsandPurls welcome to May who has joined the ranks of this knit-a-long and Mary, another CurlyHaired Knitter from NYC. Their sweater of choice...Elfin!! Apologies go out to Rowanette Carol, who writes, "Small whine - you forgot me! Carol (Rowanette) in CA doing plain old Elfin, in the dragon and drab colourway. Its lookin good ..." Plain old Elfin!! Are ya jokin'? The thrills of stockinette stitch!! The hairy haze frills!! A verified two skein sweater in the Rowan Difficulty Rating!! More importantly, it's the sweater of choice here at CurlsandPurlsNYC, my "please don't take me too seriously" sweater!! Knit it proudly sister, for there is NOTHING plain old about it!! I LOVE IT (and I know you do too!!)

In the past week I have received HUNDREDS of emails from those of you knitting away furiously on your knit-a-long project...as well as those of you who are furiously IN AVOIDANCE about your knit-a-long project and have taken to other projects and distractions. Alright, truth be told, I only received ONE email, from Ronni in NJ and pursuant to the knit-a-long host and knit-a-long knitter privilige, I cannot tell you what she said. Nope...not one word.

Now, I know it is only week two of this knit-a-long and many of us, in full appreciation of the ten/fifteen year statute of knitting limitations here at CurlsandPurlsNYC, have been doing the "slow and steady" thing. That said, one knit-a-long participant has been knitting at lightening speed on a complicated Rowan intarsia pattern. Our very own Intarsia Viking, Rowanette Sissel, has shown her true colours, no pun intended, with Old Tile by Brandon Mabley in Rowan 34. Her master knitting skills can be seen at my co-knit-a-long host Emma's blog..take a look if you haven't seen her work yet...and Emma's work on "Linen Drape" is a marvel too, and her socks, and tumbling blocks, and....

cpi33.jpg

That said, I now present the First Ever Fall/Winter 2003 Sweater/Jumper award to Sissel, for "Intarsia Knitting Extraordinaire!!" Big round of applause please!! No worries knitters, there are more awards where that came from.

Time for the weekly "whinging," my new favorite word for "whining" that my friend Sam has shared with me. Wordsmith Knitters....got any other words for "whine" to share with me!! Carry on!!

Tricks of the Trade

Last year I knit about ten scarves as presents for friends and family...and despite all of that scarf knitting, I did not knit one for myself. So, a few weeks ago when I bought some v. lovely cashmere and merino hand painted designer closeout yarn, I knew I had to use this yarn to make a scarf for myself.

Now, the thing with buying these one of a kind, close out, designer yarns is that the dyelots often vary and the amounts sold are in smallish quantities. While the dyelots I bought carried the same colour tones, they were not a perfect match. I have four skeins of this yarn...with a matching split of two and two. After I got home, I was worried that I would not have enough to make a proper scarf. What to do? This yarn requires US 9 needles, but, in order off its make its beauty standout, I used US 13's instead and knit it up in garter stitch. Brilliant idea!! The bigger needles and garter stitch showed off the colours and made the yarn go further than it might have on smaller needles.

When I went to join the second ball, the colour mismatch was too profound...and even though I like things that are quirky and funky, this was just plain wrong. What to do again? I frogged the scarf and started over...and used both skeins at the same time, alternating rows for each skein.

SSCN0005.JPG

Voila!! The two skeins together blend beautifully this way and I am on my way to having a colourful and cuddly scarf to keep me warm. Lesson learned for this knitter -- use bigger needles when making a scarf to make the yarn go farther and carry two different dyelots throughout the project to make them blend.

Happy knitting!!

Life Imitating Knit

Over at Mason Dixon Knitting, Ann and Kay have been somewhat preoccupied with a Rowan All Seasons Cotton sweater that has been affectionately renamed "Cherry Boobs." Its proper English, Rowan pattern name is "Cherry Picking." Given the positioning of the intarsia cherries on this sweater, not sure which name is more appropos.

This morning, after meeting with Detective NiceGuyLuckyCharm, who I was referred to by Lt. IamHeretoHelpYou, I came upon a woman on the 6 subway who had an interesting tatoo. Seems that she had come up with her own version of "Cherry Boobs" in the form of cherries tatooed on well, her right boob. So much for the All Seasons Cotton.

My meeting with the NYPD was quite a success....and now a replacement license and registration have been obtained. Bank seems to be squared away. Things are starting to look up already!!

Ball Two!!

No...not baseball!! Of my felted tweed for Elfin!!

SSCN0274.JPG

It wasn't so hard to get to ball two on this sweater, since I spent FIVE HOURS in the DMV trying to get a replacement license and car registration following theft of my wallet last friday. After nearly five days of inquiring, waiting, faxing, explaining, and in some instance groveling, I STILL DONT HAVE MY DOCUMENTS. Ok, I will stop shouting...the thing is, while waiting and waiting for my number to be called at the DMV gives me LOTS of time to knit, knitting in a crowded, noisy, airless government building that smells like old pepperoni pizza is not my ideal knitting venue. Simply stated: bureacracy is NOT pretty.

Its been a tough week here at CurlsandPurlsNYC in the wake of having my wallet stolen. Two things cheered me up though....this lovely yarn from Mason Dixon Ann:

SSCN0271.JPG

Isn't it beautiful? Mason Dixon Ann sent this to me to make Birch, although with the all the complaining and whining going on during the Birch knitalong, I don't know whether to love her or hate her for encouraging me to knit this cobweb of hair that passes itself off as a shawl!! Many thanks Mason Dixon Ann, many thanks!!

The postman also dropped off my first delivery EVER of Phildar yarn, which is the second thing that cheered me up this week!!

SSCN0277.JPG

My Phildar Falaise arrived from Canada...more is coming from the Netherlands. A big thank you to Blue Blog Alison for helping me find a stockist for this yarn. Now I can make a Becky Wanna Be Sweater too!! The only question is WHEN??

I am going to put the past few horrible days behind me, look forward to the long weekend, and wonder with amusement what kind of wacky stuff the Sweater/Jumper Knit-a- long knitters are going to spring on me next wednesday.

Wednesday Whine

1thread2-thumb.jpg

Congratulations knitters, our Sweater/Jumper Knitalong has gotten off to a fine start!! A big warm CurlsandPurlsNYC welcome to all those knitters who joined last week!! The roster, as of this writing, is as follows:

Elfin: me, Mason Dixon Kay (for Mason Dixon Ann), Rowanette Carol, Rowanette Heather, Essence of Emma, Fluffa Becky, Rowanette Jo, Tiffany, and Karin;

Cardie—Rowanette Sissel, Mason Dixon Ann (for Mason Dixon Kay), All Tangled Up Polly, Blue Blog Alison, and Knitting Biologist Theresa;

Pullover – Rowanette Sharon, Digital Kristine , J Strizzy Joanna , Silent K Kay, Rowanette Benedetta, Knit One Donna, and Fiber Addict Morgan;

Jacket –Rowanette Ronni and , Rowanette Jill;

Something/Anything --Ulrika!! Get thee to the yarn shop!! Or else make me some chocolate muffins!!

Not really sure what the heck their sweaters are – DC Lizard and Rowanette Kristine J!! Did I leave anybody out?

I would like to welcome another knitter who was too shy to post her desire to join this knitalong. Another big warm CurlsandPurlsNYC welcome to Queen Elizabeth, who sent her request via the Royal Mail! Quite exciting!! Her Majesty writes that she just can’t wait to start “knitting and whinging” with the populace!! Queen Elizabeth has committed to knit several doggie sweaters for her beloved corgis and is wondering if anyone has a Rowan pattern she might borrow. Email to: QueenEyeforDoggieKnits@buckinghampalace.co.uk. First Lady Laura Bush wanted joined too, but her knitting needles keep getting confiscated by Homeland Security.

Before the Wednesday Whine begins, we need to do some knit-a-long housekeeping. First off, it seems that THE RULES offended some and a whole lot of people wanted to know if any of THE RULES were directed specifically at them. All I can say is that if the gauge fits sister, swatch it, ok?

Second, Rowanette Sharon, I have a message for you. Cornelia Tittle Tattle said her name is Cornelia Tuttle Hamilton and that if you want to knit her Merlanna sweater for this knit-a-long you should stop calling her Cornelia Tuttle Wotsit. Similarly, for those of you who said that they were knitting “Moonbeam” from Rowan 34, Kim Hargreaves took offense. Turns out you are knitting “Moonlight.” Emails of apology should be sent to HolmfirthGrumpyabouttheMoon@knitrowan.com;

Third, Rowanette Heather has started a 12 step program for knitters who have startitis but not finishitis. Email her at StartMeUpandNeverStop@Heather.com, small donations for yarn, needles, and other knitting paraphernalia are appreciated. Meetings to be held at Liberty of London on a date soon to be announced;

Fourth, additional WHINETLK lines have been added to handle ALL of your calls.
Also, Theresa W has kindly agreed to accept emails from whiners in the Midwest. Email to: BugMeintheMidwestWhine@KnittingBiologist.com. Our very own intarsia Viking, Rowanette Sissel, has agreed to accept email whine from intarsia knitters. Email again for that is: TooManyColoursWhatWasIThinking@I-VikingSissel.com;

Fifth, Polly has asked that I tell all of you that there are no more individual knitting counseling sessions available in October;

Lastly, Mason Dixon Ann needs your help in deciding what colour Kid Silk Haze should adorn her Elfin!! Please cast your votes accordingly!!

Before the Wednesday whine begins, is anyone interested in MY NEEDS? I thought so....

SSCN0268.JPG

Voila.....my Elfin is moving along quite nicely!! I love the colour and the Felted Tweed knits up beautifully...but, and here is my whine on this subject....my hands are so dry from working with this yarn. Any suggestions? And, what's with the decreasing and increasing in the middle of the back?

Ok, enough about me....how about you? As Sir Elton John would say, "whine on you crazy, diamonds...."

Twenty five days!!

...to Halloween, that is. Do you like my ghoolish friends???!!

SSCN0262.JPG

Halloween is my favorite holiday!! Spooky stories, colourful costumes, CANDY, and just plain fun!! What's not to love?

My fall colours inspired scarf that I have been knitting on the subway is coming along nicely. What do you think?

SSCN0233.JPG

Great story today in the NY Times on Stitches East. Sounds like a great time was had by all!! My favorite news story though from the past few days concerns one Antoine Yates and his apartment pets...a 425 pound Bengal Tiger and a five foot Caiman!! Yates raised this tiger, Ming, from a cub and it was ONLY RECENTLY that his jungle adoption was discovered. Ming got a bit too eager for lunch this weekend and it seems that Yates was on the menu. Ming bit Yates and then sat on him; no word how Yates escaped. At the emergency room, Yates told the medical folks that he was bit by a pit pull and in the meantime he sent a friend over to feed the kitty in his absence....who did so by opening the door and throwing in three raw chickens. Ming had to be subdued by a brave member of the NYPD who had to rappel down the apartment building and shoot a tranquilizer dart through the window at kitty Ming. The next day his neighbors were not too surprised by it all and some were quoted as saying, "he really loves animals." This, my friends, is "an only in New York" story. Only in New York could someone harbour a Bengal tiger without detection from the authorities, lie about to keep it quiet, and then not have your neighbors be too surprised by the truth of it all. Need I say AGAIN how much I love it here? Next time your neighbor's cat howls in the back ally in the middle of the night, think twice!!

Pleasure and Pain

BK.jpg

Last night I had the great pleasure of meeting two "Rowanettes" who were here for a vist to NYC. Benedetta came to NYC all the way from the great state of Massachussetts (via Italy!!) while Kristine J. came all the way from Sweden (via London and lots of other places in between!) Aren't they lovely?!! Inside and out!!

Like any good knitter visiting another city, their adventures in NYC included many a trip to new and exotic yarn stores. While I was toiling away at my office, they met up with Mason Dixon Kay at one of my favorite new yarn stores, SchoolProducts. Mason Dixon Kay gave them a big warm welcome and the yarn shopping began with gusto. Photo essay appears over at Mason Dixon Knitting!!! I caught up with them over at a new store to all of us, Magry Knits, a funky, quirky store where the owner regaled us with stories of her interesting home spun knits and designs. Then it was on to Downtown Yarn, our of my favorite places in NYC to buy yarn. The store is so pretty and colourful and Rita, the owner, has become our knitting friend.

At Downtown Yarn Kristine and Benedetta spoke with great excitement of their Fall/Winter Sweater/Jumper Knit-a-Long projects, which warmed my heart greatly!! Sadly, I did not bring my camera, which later turned out to be a good thing as you will soon see, so I did not get a chance to take pictures of Kristine J. 's sweater in progress that she so proudly showed us. For now all I will say is that it is a lovely shade of green and is in a really snuggly yarn!! Benedetta cuddled up very quickly to some v. beautiful alpaca and a purchase soon followed. Mason Dixon Kay was having many a moment with yarn as well, but I will let her tell you that part of the story!! We also were experimenting with different colours of Kid Silk Haze for my version of Elfin as well as for Mason Dixon Ann's, for it seems neither of us is happy with our original selections. And YES, yarn substitutions are permitted in THE RULES!! Will you believe me if I told you that I DID NOT buy any yarn. I DIDN'T. Nope, it was not the yarn diet....it was that the day before I bought the yarn for my version of the Becky Wanna Be Sweater (yes, in the recently discontinued and highly sought after Phildar Falaise!!!). Better still, Kristine brought me this beautiful yarn all the way from Sweden, so I felt that my yarn basket had runneth over for the day!!

SSCN0260.JPG

Isn't this GORGEOUS!! I love it!!

After Downtown Yarn, we said our goodbyes to Mason Dixon Kay, sniff, sniff, and the three of us headed over to a nearby coffee shop for coffe and a chat. Benedetta and Kristine J. were so lovely and great, true gal pals...the conversation was so nice and easy that it felt as if we had know each other for a long time. I was v. happy for not only was it the beginning of the weekend, but also because I knew that I had made two new friends.

The pain came after I said goodbye to my two new pals...but not for the reasons you may think. On my way home in a cab, I discovered that my wallet was missing!! For the first time here in my life I had become a crime victim! My wallet was stolen at or near the coffee bar!! The thieves acted quickly and had made many a purchase by the time I discovered my wallet was missing. What can I say, I am angry and feel v. violated by this, but also relieved that the crime was done in a non violent way. I am also glad that I didn't have my camera with me, because that probably would have been nicked as well. For reasons that I do not care to reveal here, my guess is that the thieves are not too clever. I hope that when they are caught, they enjoy a nice long stay at Riker's Island. I hear the food is GREAT!!

Let the Knitting Begin!!

1fireworks-thumb.jpg

Hello October, the official start date of the Fall/Winter Sweater Knit-a-long!!
The roster for this knit-along is quite impressive....knitters from far and wide have agreed to join in on this event!! Cardigans, pullovers, and who knows what else will be knit worldwide in unison! In the coming weeks (months, years even!!) yarn will be unraveling and needles will be clicking away as knitters follow patterns, deconstruct patterns, and in some cases, completely ignore patterns, as they knit up their sweaters.

From what I know so far, the following knitters will be knitting Elfin: Becky, Kay (for Ann), Emma, Heather, Carol, Ronni, and Tiffany!! The following knitters will be knitting either a different cardie, a pullover, a turtleneck, or whatever: Theresa W, Ann (for Kay), Kristine, Polly, Jo, Joanna, and Rene. Ulrika is knitting something, anything...and of course, the ever loveable Carolyn is still acting all coy and has not yet committed to this project!! (Those who are not knitting Elfin, please let me know what type of sweater you are knitting so that I can link you to the correct drawing!!)

1books2-thumb.jpg

Now for the important stuff about this knit-a-long....THE RULES!!! Kay, yes, our beloved Kay from Mason Dixon Knitting and I have drafted THE RULES for this knit-a-long. As both lawyers and knitting bloggers, it seemed only right that we draft THE RULES. (If you check out our listings in Martindale Hubbell you will see that “knitting law” is listed as one of our practice areas!!!) Kay and I took this rules drafting assignment very seriously. We consulted every Rowan pattern book known to mankind, the US Constitution, the Magna Carta, the Geneva Convention, as well as Miss Manners and the Good Houskeeping Complete Book of Needlecraft (vintage edition). Kay and I also conferred extensively with Kim Hargreaves, Louisa Harding, Alice Starmore, Debbie Bliss, and of course, Kaffe Fassett ( Kay was beside herself for that one!). Now, without much further ado, here are THE RULES:

1) Rules are rules;

2) Knitters must knit the sweater they originally agreed to knit. Knitters may knit a different sweater if: a) upon reflection, the original sweater makes you look fat; b) you forgot what sweater you originally agreed to knit; c) you never got around to buying the yarn for the original sweater you agreed to knit and it is now discontinued; d) you found a knockoff of the original sweater that looks better than you could ever knit; and e) any other reason a reasonable knitter would think was a good enough reason to knit something else;

3) Knitters who want to whine generally about their projects must do so on WEDNESDAYS ONLY. Whiners should communicate with me by email at Whiner@curlsandpurls.com except as follows: knitters who want to whine about knitting with chenille, please contact Ann at ChenilleWhine@masondixonknitting.com. Knitters who want to whine about Kid Silk Haze should direct their emails to Kay at HairyHazeWhine@masondixonknitting.com. Whiners in the DC area should contact Kristine at CapitalWhine@digitalyarn.com. Pacific Northwest whiners contact Joanne at LeftCoastWhine@jstrizzy.com. International whiners, please contact either Emma at I-WhineUK@emma.com or Becky at I-WhineFrancaise@skinnyrabbit.com;

4) Any and all questions or problems with patterns, yarn, subway/bus/tube/mass transit knitting, or finding the time to knit in general should be directed to Polly at HelpMePlease@alltangledup.com. Individual counseling sessions are available by appointment for a rather large fee. Fees must be paid in advance;

5) Knitters will have TEN years to finish their respective projects. Requests for an adjournment must be made no more than THREE years in advance. All requests must be in writing and sent to INeedMoreTime@curlsandpurls.com; and

6) Rules are rules, except when there are no rules.

Got it?

I have cast on.....how about you?
